Women's Basketball

Michael had to head to a meeting in Knoxville yesterday, and I went along for the ride. While there, we passed the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and I thought I would post a photo of it since women's basketball is popular both in the state (UT Lady Volunteers) and Nashville (Lady Commodores).

Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, and a year later, Senda Berenson adapted the rules for women's play. Within two years, women were playing basketball on the college level, and the game has continued to grow in popularity. In recent years, the US National Team has won the Olympic Gold medal three times, and the bronze medal once.

Coach Pat Summit, who has headed the Lady Vols for 34 years, receives credit for making basketball popular at the once-football dominated University of Tennessee. She was in the inaugural class of WBHOF inductees in 1999, and was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. She has over 900 wins and fewer than 200 losses over her career.

Women's basketball is also popular at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. In the six years she's been at Vanderbilt, coach Melanie Balcomb has taken the Lady Commodores to the NCAA regional finals fives straight years.

Really nice post and that is one big ball. Reminds me of those baskets everyone was making a few years ago. Their home offices are made like a basket.

I like that big ball :-) -- I really hope you will have chance to visit Torino when you will come back in Italy. Should be nice to know what you felt when you saw Petrano the town from where everything was born (talking about your family)

I did not know there was a Womans Hall Of Fame. I really like the capture. Would you mind if I used this photo on my other website I run? I'm not sure if I'd use it, but I'd like to get your permission if I do and if you don't object.

I like to change the background of my logo every now and then. My other site address it would appear on in March would be: OfficePool64.com

Great shot! I'm sure the giant basketball brings in some people who are passing by and don't realize there is a Women's Hall of Fame.
