Skywatch Friday - Cranes, Cranes, Cranes

There is a lot of building going on all over Nashville. Developers are putting up high-rise condominium towers all over the downtown area, or they're renovating old buildings and turning those into condominiums. Cranes dot the downtown skyline.

Here's an interesting fact: It takes a crane operator so long - almost 60 minutes - to get to his post (the white box just below the horizontal arm) that he stays there the entire day, even during break time. You can see in the smaller photo that the cranes tower over buildings that have 13 or more stories.

I took these photos last evening as we were on our way to a downtown event. For most of the day, the sky had been cloudy and grey, but around 5:00, the sun came out, and the then-cloudless sky turned blue.

COMING TOMORROW: I have a heart-warming and important story to share with you. Please stop back!

Then those things must be equipped with a toilet.

Unfortunately, our construction activity has slowed. From what I have heard the slowdown is mainly due to the credit crunch. A recent news article explained that one site, the Peacock Hotel, had funding for the fist phase (which included a crane) only to have funding for phase 2 delayed. I have to think it cost a lot of money for a crane to sit ideal.

I think they use bottles as toilets. :s

When I lived outside of Paris, there was a lot of residential construction in my area. The apartment I lived in was brand new and there were several buildings under construction just across the street. I wonder if I would recognize the place even just a year later.

I hope at least all the new buildings and such are attractive. I hate it when they put up ugly stuff.

That's tough! I thought they made good money for putting up with such a sh**ty job, but the top salary is only around 48K.

Nice photos!

Beautiful clear skies. And the cranes add such beauty to that sky.

We don't see too many cranes around here, if any, but there was one on the interstate in Montgomery today. I didn't relish driving under it.

Great photos! We took my step-daughter to Nashville for her graduation gift. She had a blast, and can't wait to go back.

I'm afraid to ask if he gets pee break or not. :-)

A huge crane crash down Upper East Side last week killing three works and two residents in the area. It's a dangerous job and structure.
