Most people equate NASHVILLE (aka Music City) with country music. But there is so much more to our city. Let me introduce you to the people, the places and the things that give Nashville its unique personality!
Brings back lots of memories of a time when I helped my mom and she filled bushel baskets of canning jars with the fruits of our labors. Everything possible was canned, including meat. I wonder how many people still use the jars? Our neighborhood store used to sell them at picking time but I have not seen them for several years.
Love those old jars. Canning our summer labors was a way to make it through the winter in Smith County. I still love to make canned items and give lots of it away. Jams and jellies and Pickle. My Mother had two very good Squash Pickle recipes and when I do get a burst of energy and make them, people just love them. Thanks for the memories that came flooding in with this photo. Peace
I used to can. The hardest recipe was pickled watermelon. I spent 3 days on that project and came out with only 3 jars. I gave one jar of pickled watermelon to my mother-in-law, one to my husband's best friend and we kept one. If folks were canning to save money, I don't think one really did. It was just fun doing it even if it was hard work during the hot summer months! I gave my canning jars to a younger person so she could start that tradition in her home. Joyce

I'm fortunate to have had a lot of fun adventures in my life. I've taught Spanish, English, Drama and Journalism. I've done photography, PR and advertising for a number of companies. For 9 years, I owned Paper Moon, a paper arts store, and I'm currently finishing my MFA in Creative Writing through Murray State's low-residency program. For a few years, I've been living with one foot in Las Vegas and one foot in Nashville. We're permanently back in Las Vegas now, so I've discontinued this blog. And, I'm still working on making history! :-D

I have never canned, but people down here still do. And one of the guys I work with sells his honey from ball jars. It's delicious!

My daughter has been canning her food for two years now. It's a beautiful shot.

You see something similar for sale in France so presumably people can. I use them for spices - or rather I did...
well I never did but I LOVE Ball jars. I love to use them for soups etc. Beautiful.

Hey Chris
I was given an award and I am passing it on to you. Peace
Thanks, Di!
I just found your blog, and I've already fell in love! And, by the way, my grandmother still makes homemade peach and plum jam every summer. :)
